onestar press, first five years, Engholm Engelhorn Galerie, Vienna

April 2006

1* x 5 Since it’s founding 5 years ago, onestar press has proven itself to be attracted by hybrid styles, borderline activities, crossover artists, networks, the constantly mutating potential of the internet and the frontier of public and private spheres. The press’s grassroots foundations and expanding digital networks embody an internet paradox a kind of daisy-chain complicity across borders. onestar press is a bricks & clicks collective that gives artists and their publics actual alternatives for expression and distribution, the kind of exposure that counts highly in our age of hype and art fair bloat. onestar publishes work across the spectrum, not only by superstars but by “struggling” artists as well. The press’s storied tagline - strictly un-edited by the publisher - perfectly embodies it’s principles: it’s the artist’s work that counts, not the publisher’s politics, or even his bottom line. That’s a part of the reason that onestar press’s success is so richly deserved: 125 artists published, almost as many multiples and videos, installations created in major museums and gallery spaces with architects and curators, travelling shows, international conferences, university workshops, a newspaper (Afterart News) and, far from the maddening crowd, many of the best art parties anyone has ever attended. 5 years, onestar! And here’s to many more years of creative energy, eye-popping art and the great international underground you’ve become! Richard Dailey, 2006
